Businesses that Green our World - Jangneus Design, Swedish Kitchen Culture

This week, as part of our Businesses that Green Our World series, I’d like to introduce you to Jangneus Design, the creators of possibly the most beautiful, eco-friendly dishclothes and green cleaning products I have ever come across.

As well as being fabulously funky and environmentally-friendly, Jangneus Design have cleverly created their business around a subscription model, ensuring you will never run out of their wonderful dish clothes. To tell us their story and more about their product, here is our interview with Jangneus Design’s creator, Marie Jangneus-Davis.

Tell us a little about you and your background

I’m from Sweden and have lived in Oxfordshire for over 20 years but I’m in the fortunate position to spend lots of time in Sweden as well. Best of both worlds!

I‘m a creative person and have a passion for design and a soul firmly rooted in the heart of the family home. My background is mainly in retail but I’ve also spent time doing academic data research.

Being unexpectedly made redundant made me jump at the chance to set up my own business, in a field where I could utilise my creativity, as this was something I’d wanted to do for quite some time.

Explain what your product is and what problem it solves

I set up the Jangneus Design on-line shop from my garden studio in 2009. My guiding vision is to design kitchen related products that combine the Scandinavian tradition of function and design. My “flagship” product is a fun, eco-friendly and very functional dishcloth. It’s made from natural materials; cellulose and cotton, it’s very absorbent, washable and after its long and useful life, 100% biodegradable so you can put it straight on your compost heap. I’m very excited to recently having launched my second product – tea towels made from an eco-friendly union of linen and cotton. The tea towels are completely manufactured and printed with water based inks in Britain and the cloths are printed by a small family-run company in the Cotswolds. To have British made products is something I’m very proud of. All the designs are done in-house by me.

How did you come up with the idea?

My business idea came from not being able to find this kind of Swedish dishcloth here in the UK. I used to bring them back from trips to Sweden, where this type of cloth has been a feature in kitchen sinks for over 60 years! Both to use myself but also to give away as presents that were very well received, so friends started asking me to bring dishcloths back for them. The kitchen is the heart of our homes, but it can be a bit of a neglected place, especially the sink area! With my products you can add Swedish design, colour and fun without compromising on the environment.

What has been your proudest moment to date?

Proud moments happen all the time. Running your own business is a lot of hard work but also extremely rewarding. To get positive feedback from my lovely customers gives such a high every time it happens and the fact I get so many repeat orders speaks for itself. I’m also proud that I sell my products to customer all over the world, both on-line and to stores.

What has been your biggest success to date?

My biggest success to date is the trade orders I’ve received from Japan.

What are your plans for 2012?

My plan for 2012 is to have more time for product development and new designs. I will also soon have another member on the team, to help develop the wholesale side of the business and we are both looking forward to spreading the simple message of our bold and beneficial products further.

I’ve just had a new kitchen installed it is gloss stone with brown worksurfaces and splashbacks. The appliances on show are stainless steel as are the storage accessories, kettle, toaster, dishrack, fruit bowl etc. I am now looking to inject some colour. I think the green designs would be perfect to finish everything off. :-)

I like the yellow range of patterns, the house i’m renting has some pale yellow tiles as part of the tile pattern, so it’d suit it well, plus the yellow range is nice and bright, and would bring a bit of summer into the kitchen on even the more horrible of days (today comes to mind!!!) The spotted one would be my favourite in the yellow.
